Published: Saturday, 24 March 2018

Headquarters Joint Task Force Malampaya, El Nido, Palawan -- Navy vessel BRP Federico Martir (PC 385), under the operational control of Western Command's Joint Task Force Malampaya rescued a distressed banca in El Nido, Palawan on 23 March 2018.

At around 4PM, while PC 385, was conducting Maritime Patrol at vicinity 1,870 yards North East Off Miniloc Island, ship’s personnel noticed a Motor Banca at her Port Quarter with its passengers waving their hands, as a signal of distress and found that said banca was already dead on the water.

Given the rough weather condition at that time and the need to render necessary assistance, the Commanding Officer of PC 385, CDR VIRGILIO C DE GUZMAN PN(GSC) immediately decided to approach said banca and ably maneuvered to its location. The ship crew rendered necessary assistance and towed the distressed banca.

Said motor banca was then identified as Queen Cleopatra with three (3) crews including its boat captain and with twenty (20) Filipino passengers on board conducting their tour in El Nido, Palawan. Accordingly, said banca experienced an engine failure and if not rescued on time, they might have been drifted somewhere and might capsize.

CDR DE GUZMAN PN(GSC) also informed Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) at El Nido, Palawan regarding the current towing of the distressed banca. PCG then sent their aluminum boat to assist PC 385.
When the wind and current condition were already favorable, CDR DE GUZMAN PN(GSC) then decided to let the banca’s passengers board PC 385 for them to have a safer and comfortable environment. Among the twenty (20) passengers, fifteen (15) of them boarded PC 385 while the other five (5) boarded PCG’s boat. Upon reaching shallow waters the PCG boat continued the towing of the distressed banca to the shoreline of El Nido, Palawan. At around 6PM, the rescued passengers arrived safely at El Nido Pier.
