WESCOM Chief Presides in Change of Command of MALAMPAYA TASK FORCE

Camp Gen. Artemio Ricarte, Puerto Princesa City – Lt. Gen. Rustico O. Guerrero, Western Command (Wescom) Chief, presided Friday (Aug. 9) the change of command of the Malampaya Task Force held at its headquarters in Villa Libertad, El Nido, Palawan.

Navy Captain Bayani Gaerlan formally relinquished his post as Ccmmander of the Joint Task Force Malampaya (JTFM) to navy Captain Edwin A. Mackay.

Guerrero said the appointment of Mackay as JTFM commander came at an opportune time as the Armed Forces plan to put the importance of the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project to the purview of the national government.

Considered as the largest natural gas development project in the country, Malampaya can provide up to one-third of the energy requirements of the entire Luzon and one-fourth of Metro Manila. It extracts natural gas and transports it to three power plants in Batangas.

Recently, the Shell Company, one of the biggest investors in Malampaya, announced that it will put up another power plant which will mean more energy for the country.

"It would mean more opportunities for development and progress," the WESCOM Chief said.

JTFM, a composite team of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) and Philippine Navy (PN) soldiers with support teams from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Civilian Active Auxiliary Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU), was created primarily to guarantee the security of the Malampaya project.
