Camp General Artemio Ricarte, Puerto Princesa City (May 23) – A month before he actually assumes office as the chief executive of the province, governor-elect Jose Alvarez paid a courtesy call to the commander of the Palawan-based Armed Forces this afternoon.

At around 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon, Alvarez visited Maj. Gen.Rustico O. Guerrero, commander of the Western Command, and discussed possible tie-up of the provincial government with the military in the future.

Alvarez admitted that the reason for his running in the gubernatorial post is the chance to uplift economic condition especially of the poor.

“Nais kong magkaroon ng pagkakataon na maiangat man lang ang buhay ng mga pobre into middle class dahil nais nating magkaroon ng economic development sa Palawan upang maraming Palaweño ang magkaroon ng trabaho,” Alvarez said.

The two also discussed solutions on insurgency problem. The governor-elect committed the assistance of the provincial government in the local integration program of the Armed Forces.

“May mga lupa na pwede tayong maibigay at mga pananim na gaya ng rubber tree na mapagkakakitaan ng mga susukong rebelde sa gobyerno. Mabibigyan natin sila ng panibagong buhay,” Alvarez said.

For their part, Guerrero said Wescom will ensure security in the province as long as he is the commander of the unified command.Development of the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) in the West Philippine Sea as a tourism destination was also discussed.

“Dapat mukha ng economic development ang makikita sa isla, hindi mukha ng giyera because of military presence. Dito natin mapauunlad ang Kalayaan,” Guerrero said.

“Basta’t kailangan ng AFP ang tulong ng provincial government sa anumang aspeto, walang problema. Magtulungan tayo dahil gusto ko yung may katahimikan dahil maghihikayat ako ng mga investor na mamuhunan sa Palawan. Takot ang mga turista kapag may putukan,” Alvarez said.
